Latvia and Poland – a partnership with strategic depth

2026-01-12

On November 17, the 107th anniversary of Latvia’s proclamation of independence and Lāčplēsis Day – one of the most important patriotic holidays for Poland’s north-eastern neighbour – was solemnly celebrated in Warsaw.

At the invitation of H.E. Ambassador Raimonds Jansons and Defence Attaché Col. Ēriks Naglis, representatives from Polish state institutions, the diplomatic corps, business sectors, and social organizations gathered at a Warsaw hotel. The ceremony provided an opportunity to highlight the exceptional momentum of Polish-Latvian relations, which – as the Latvian Ambassador noted – are developing “naturally and confidently”.

In his speech, H.E. Raimonds Jansons reflected on the shared historical experiences of both nations. – National holidays give us the opportunity to reflect on what has shaped our nations and on the values we continue to defend – he said, noting the parallel significance of the anniversaries celebrated on November 11 and 18. Lāčplēsis Day, which honours the heroes of Latvia’s 1919 independence battles, holds added meaning in Poland. It was in Latgale that Polish soldiers fought and died, leaving a lasting mark on the two nations’ shared historical memory.
