The International Day of Women in Diplomacy, observed on 24 June, was established by the United Nations in recognition of the contribution women have made to shaping international relations, peace processes and diplomatic negotiations.
Though a relatively young observance – adopted by a resolution of the UN General Assembly in 2022 – it is not merely symbolic but, above all, practical in nature. It serves as a reminder of the need to increase women’s participation in the structures of power and in global institutions. Underlying the initiative is the conviction that diplomacy which lacks diversity is less effective. The UN points out that, for decades, women were poorly represented in official peace processes, despite playing a significant role in mediation and in brokering agreements at the local level. One of the key aims of the observance is not only to celebrate today’s women leaders, but also to recall the history of those who blazed a trail in the world of diplomacy. Their work was often ahead of its time, opening doors for the generations that followed.
