Angola Celebrates 50 years of Independence

2026-01-12

On 12 November 2025, H.E. Manuel Pedro Chaves, Ambassador of the Republic of Angola, hosted a ceremonial reception to mark the 50th anniversary of the country’s independence.

In his speech, the Ambassador emphasized the immense sacrifices made on the path to freedom. – Regaining our freedom, dignity, and independence is the result of our ancestors’ resistance to colonial occupation, followed by clandestine activity across the entire country, and ultimately the armed struggle for national liberation – said H.E. Manuel Pedro Chaves, honouring the heroic fight of Angolans against colonial rule.

Despite its difficult beginnings – including a civil war that erupted immediately after independence and claimed millions of lives – Angola has managed to achieve both stability and development. A turning point came with the 2002 peace agreement, which ended the conflict and enabled the government to focus on national reconstruction and unity.

Since then, Angola has undergone a dynamic transformation. In recent years, economic growth has been remarkable, with real GDP increasing by 4.4% in 2024 – the highest rate since 2014. Growth is no longer driven solely by oil; other sectors such as diamonds, agriculture, fisheries, and trade are gaining momentum. The government aims to further diversify the economy by investing in agriculture, tourism, agri-food processing, and mining to ensure long-term resilience and stability.
