During the pre-Christmas period, many European capitals host Christmas markets – a tradition dating back to the 15th century.
The oldest is the Dresden Striezelmarkt, held since 1434. Among the most unusual is the market in Valkenburg, Netherlands, located in medieval caves, while Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens are perfect for families. The market in Zurich, with its “singing Christmas tree”, is also worth a visit. In 2025, the title of the best Christmas market in Europe went to Gdańsk, while the most picturesque is said to be in Røros, Norway. Each market offers an array of local delicacies, handicrafts, and a magical atmosphere.
This year, I decided to visit Prague to experience the festive magic and rediscover the charm of one of Europe’s most beautiful capitals.
Charles Bridge – The Timeless Symbol of the City
Charles Bridge is one of Prague’s most iconic and frequently visited landmarks. A walk across the bridge is a must when visiting the city. From early morning until late at night, the bridge buzzes with life – street performers, musicians, painters and souvenir vendors create a vibrant atmosphere. The statue of St John of Nepomuk is particularly popular; legend has it that touching it brings good luck and ensures a return to Prague.
Built in the 14th century on the initiative of Emperor Charles IV, the bridge served as the city’s only crossing over the Vltava River for centuries. This stone structure, over half a kilometre long and supported by 15 massive pillars, is a Gothic engineering masterpiece. It is adorned with 30 Baroque statues of saints and notable figures from Czech history. Charles Bridge is considered the oldest stone bridge in the world.
It connects two historic Prague districts – Malá Strana and the Old Town. Each end is guarded by a tower: the Malostranská Bridge Tower on the Malá Strana side and the Old Town Bridge Tower on the other. Both towers are open to visitors.
