For years, November in Warsaw has taken on a unique character thanks to the Five Flavours Asian Film Festival – one of Poland’s most significant cultural events dedicated to the cinema of the Far East.
This year’s 19th edition, held from November 12 to 30, once again drew film enthusiasts, cultural scholars, and members of the creative community. A highlight of the program was the special focus on films from Hong Kong, made possible with the support of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Berlin (HKETO Berlin).
Hong Kong cinema – celebrated for its diversity, stylistic boldness, and innovative storytelling – as long held a prominent place in global film culture. Polish audiences this year had the chance to experience six carefully curated titles, including works by both acclaimed directors and emerging talents. These films offered viewers a nuanced glimpse into the complexities of contemporary Hong Kong and the richness of its cinematic tradition.
Culture as a Bridge Between East and West
At the festival’s opening ceremony on November 12, Mr Billy Leung, Acting Director of HKETO Berlin, addressed the audience. In his remarks, he highlighted the power of cinema as a vehicle for cultural expression, dialogue, and creativity.
– Film is a powerful medium that serves as a bridge between cultures and is also one of the hallmarks of Hong Kong’s creative industries. It is a pleasure for HKETO Berlin to co-finance the Five Flavours Asian Film Festival for the tenth time, presenting to Polish audiences the rich film heritage of Hong Kong as well as its contemporary film scene – said Mr Leung.
