What is the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and what role does it truly play in shaping global politics and law?<\/strong>
\nThe Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is the world\u2019s oldest parliamentary organisation. It was established on 30 June 1889 in Paris, at a time when armed conflict was the principal means of resolving international disputes. It was founded by two left-wing parliamentarians \u2013 a Frenchman and a Briton, William Randal Cremer and Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Passy \u2013 who believed that if states had parliaments and developing democracies, then parliaments themselves should become a forum for dialogue and for the prevention of war. Their aim was to promote peace and the peaceful coexistence of nations.
\nAlthough the IPU did not prevent the two world wars, its historical and moral significance is immense. Several of its activists became Nobel Peace Prize laureates, a testament to the organisation\u2019s contribution to building international order.
\nToday, the IPU brings together parliaments from 183 countries. The Polish Parliament became a member in 1921 and remains so today, with a brief interruption between 1949 and 1954.<\/p>\n
