85 YEARS OF S\u0141U\u017bEWIEC RACECOURSE
\nOn June 3, 2025, the S\u0142u\u017cewiec Racecourse marked its 85th anniversary \u2013 an institution deeply intertwined with Warsaw\u2019s history and one that has witnessed the city’s and Europe\u2019s most turbulent times.
\nHorse racing enjoys particular popularity in countries like the UK, France, and Australia, where events such as the Melbourne Cup are national holidays. In Poland, the first recorded horse race dates back to 1777, along a route from Ujazd\u00f3w to Wola in what is now modern-day Warsaw. The race was a wager between Kazimierz Rzewuski and Sir Charles Whitworth, with Rzewuski\u2019s mare La Bella taking the win \u2013 an event witnessed by King Stanis\u0142aw August Poniatowski himself.
\nWarsaw\u2019s first racecourse opened in 1841 on Nowowiejska Street. In 1887, a new track was built on Pole Mokotowskie, not far from today\u2019s Unia Lubelska Square. As Warsaw expanded, the need for a modern racing venue led to the creation of the S\u0142u\u017cewiec Racecourse.<\/p>\n
