The Jewish\u2013Palestinian conflict over the same land \u2013 now more than a century old \u2013 has reached a critical juncture. The longstanding dream of the Zionist movement to transform all of historic Palestine into a Jewish state appears closer to realization than ever before. Today\u2019s Israeli government, dominated by far-right and religious extremist factions, no longer hides its intentions. This is no longer just about controlling, marginalizing, or persecuting Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem. The agenda now includes ethnic cleansing, territorial annexation, and the forced expulsion of a people who remain deeply rooted in their homeland \u2013 some six million Palestinians, a number roughly equal to the Jewish population of Israel within its 1967 borders.<\/p>\n
Israeli leaders have increasingly referred to this as a \u201cfinal solution,\u201d with little regard for the historical and deeply troubling weight of that term. While the government exploits the horrific Hamas terrorist attack of 7 October 2023, to justify its actions, it often overlooks the broader context: this was a tragic chapter in a long and bloody conflict. One that not only continues to inflame the region but also has wide-reaching consequences \u2013 including for Europe, which faces its own geopolitical challenges, particularly from Russia. The Israeli\u2013Palestinian conflict cannot be resolved through illusions of peace or policies of permanent confrontation. Only a sustainable and just peace can bring stability and end the decades of turmoil.<\/p>\n
