On April 9, the Embassy of the Republic of Cuba in Poland and the Cervantes Institute hosted a screening of the film “El Benny”<\/em> about the Cuban music icon Benny Mor\u00e9, to celebrate the 105th anniversary of his birth.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“El Benny”<\/em> is a 2006 Cuban biographical film that recounts the life story of Benny Mor\u00e9, one of the most important figures in Latin music of the 20th<\/sup> century. Directed by Jorge Luis S\u00e1nchez, the film aims to capture both the musical and personal sides of the mambo legend. Considered one of the most important works of Cuban cinema, this production pays tribute to the unparalleled artist who revolutionised Latin music with his creativity and charisma.<\/p>\n

Benny Mor\u00e9, whose full name was Bartolom\u00e9 Maximiliano Mor\u00e9 Guti\u00e9rrez, was born in 1919 in the Cuban province of Las Villas. A vocalist, composer, and arranger, he achieved worldwide fame thanks to his unique style, which combined elements of mambo, son, guaracha, and bolero. His music reflected the Cuban spirit, making him a national icon. “El Benny”<\/em> not only documents his career but also delves into his difficult personal life and struggles with addiction.<\/p>\n

The film begins at the point when Mor\u00e9 is already gaining recognition in the Cuban music scene. Viewers are introduced to his life in a modest rural home, where he faced poverty and challenging conditions like many artists. Nevertheless, his talent for singing and playing instruments quickly came to the fore. A pivotal moment in his life was his move to Havana, where he started collaborating with many renowned orchestras. Throughout the film, we witness how Benny gradually gains popularity despite life’s obstacles, with his vibrant personality becoming an integral part of his success.<\/p>\n
