World climate summit COP29 in Baku

The international climate summit COP29 was held in the Azerbaijani capital Baku from
11 to 22 November 2024. – We are on the road to collapse – warned Mukhtar Babayev, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, during the conference. Charles Michel, President of the European Council, appealed to those gathered: The instinct to survive must prevail over collective suicide. We must work for a just and inclusive transition. The European Union is ready.

– Azerbaijan was honoured to host COP29 with the unanimous support of the international community. 72,000 registered participants from 196 countries, including 80 presidents, vice-presidents and prime ministers, gathered in Baku to discuss climate issues at the global conference – H.E. Nargiz Gurbanova, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Poland, told the Ambassador magazine.

World leaders met at the historic COP29 international climate summit. They discussed concrete agreements on a new common goal for climate finance to replace the compromise reached at the COP15 climate summit in Copenhagen. At that time, developed countries agreed to provide $100 billion a year by 2020 for climate action in developing countries. There was also talk of strengthening national climate plans and targets.
But the main task of the summit was to set a new annual target for rich countries to transfer funds to poorer countries to fight climate change. Many developing countries stressed that they could not cut greenhouse gas emissions faster without financial support for investment.
