The Hungarian Presidency

2024-11-05

Hungary took over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from Belgium on 1 July 2024. The slogan of the Hungarian Presidency is ‘Let’s make Europe great again’.

Hungary takes over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union at a time of exceptional circumstances and challenges. Our continent is facing common challenges due to the war in our neighbourhood, unstable security situation, illegal migration, increasing dependence on the international supply chain, natural disasters, the effects of climate change and the impact of demographic trends.

As 2024 is a year of transition, the Hungarian Presidency will have to ensure continuity of work in the Council in cooperation with the newly established European Parliament and the European Commission, will have to ensure the continuity of work in the Council and start implementing the Strategic Agenda 2024-2029, which sets long-term guidelines for the future work of the Union. The Hungarian Presidency and Europe must prepare for the fact that wars, armed conflicts, global humanitarian crises and their consequences will continue to challenge the continent in the second half of 2024.

The Hungarian Presidency will focus on seven themes:

  1. Strengthening EU competitiveness
  2. Strengthening the EU’s defence policy
  3. Coherent and substantial enlargement policy
  4. Stopping illegal migration
  5. Shaping the future cohesion policy
  6. Promoting a farmer-centred EU agricultural policy
