Statehood Day of the Republic of Slovenia

On 19 June, the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Poland celebrated the Statehood Day of the Republic of Slovenia with a reception held in the banquet hall of the Regent Hotel in Warsaw. The guests included representatives of the Polish government offices, the diplomatic corps, the Slovenian business community, and friends of the Embassy.

At the beginning of his speech, H.E. Ambassador Bojan Pograjc mentioned that 2024 is a special year because it also marks two other celebrations: the 20^th anniversary of the Republic of Slovenia’s membership in the European Union and the 20^th anniversary of Slovenia’s commitment to peace as a reliable ally in NATO, both of which have had a very positive impact on Slovenia’s development in recent years.

H.E. the Ambassador then turned to history. As many as 33 years ago, on 25 June 1991, the plebiscite will of the Slovenian people, expressed six months earlier in December 1990, was realised with the proclamation of Slovenian independence. On that day, Slovenia took its first step as an independent and sovereign country with all the necessary political, legal and moral foundations in accordance with international law.

Then, H.E. the Ambassador added, Slovenia is today a sovereign, independent and internationally recognised democratic country based on the rule of law and human rights, a member of the Schengen area and the eurozone.

Referring to the all-out war in Ukraine, he said, Today, Slovenia is one of the countries that knows from its own experience, knows how much support and assistance is needed for the Ukrainian struggle for freedom after the unprovoked and brutal aggression of its eastern neighbour. He also appealed to the audience to never forget that the Ukrainian people are fighting their own heroic war for themselves and for all of us.
