St Patrick’s Day

2024-05-29

St Patrick’s Day is Ireland’s national holiday and is celebrated every year on 17 March. On this day, all of Ireland celebrates the feast day of Patrick, a missionary who arrived in Ireland in 432 AD and played a significant role in the conversion of Ireland to Christianity. To mark the occasion, Patrick Haughey, H.E. Ambassador of Ireland to Poland, organised several events.

St Patrick’s Day is celebrated in a very pompous way in Ireland. On this day, which is a public holiday for the Irish, there are many parades, festivals, parties or street processions, and people dress up as gnomes, clover leaves, some men with beards dye them green. In bars and restaurants, friends gather to sample St Patrick’s mugs and green beer and to enjoy this joyous celebration. Many restaurants also offer musical performances of traditional Irish music, adding to the amazing atmosphere of this celebration.

St Patrick’s Day events in Poland

Events were held across the country, including in many schools, where children dressed in green and learned about the history of St Patrick’s Day and Ireland.

Ambassador Patrick Haughey visited Primary School 364 in Warsaw, which has a special connection with Ireland. The school’s patron saint is Constance Markiewicz. She was a leading figure in the Irish independence movement in the early 20th century. During the meeting with the Ambassador, the students put on a wonderful display of music, poetry and dance.

One of the highlights of the St Patrick’s Day celebrations in Poland was the Charity Ball organised by the St Patrick’s Foundation. For over 20 years the Foundation has organised fantastic evenings of Irish music, culture, food and drink, raising over PLN 6 million for Polish charities.

On March 13th, Enterprise Ireland, together with the Irish-Polish Chamber of Commerce, the American Chamber of Commerce, the British-Polish Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian-Polish Chamber of Commerce organised a business mixer to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. Guests enjoyed a wonderful evening of Irish food, drinks, music and dancing.
