Slovenian National Day Celebrations

2025-07-23

On June 23, Warsaw hosted a ceremonial celebration of Slovenia’s Statehood Day and Slovenian Armed Forces Day.

The event began with the national anthems of the Republic of Slovenia, Poland, and the European Union.

Following the welcome address, His Excellency Ambassador Bojan Pograjc of Slovenia reflected on his country’s history, stating:

Thirty-four years ago, on June 25, 1991, the will of the Slovenian people—expressed six months earlier in a plebiscite held in December 1990—was realized with the proclamation of Slovenia’s independence. On that day, Slovenia took its first step as an independent and sovereign state, built upon solid political, legal, and moral foundations in accordance with international law.

Ambassador Pograjc emphasized that this marked Slovenia’s debut on the international stage, supported by strong legal, moral, and political grounding. Following a victorious War of Independence and the pursuit of international recognition, Slovenia went on to become a full member of the United Nations, the European Union, NATO, the Schengen Area, and the Eurozone.

In addition to Statehood Day, the celebration also honored Slovenian Armed Forces Day—traditionally observed on May 15. His Excellency was joined by Defence Attaché Navy Captain Gorazd Bartol, underscoring the importance of security and sovereignty in the modern Slovenian state.
