Nowruz – the Iranian New Year

2025-07-23

Nowruz is a traditional holiday celebrating the Iranian New Year, which is observed on the spring equinox. It has a history dating back over 3,000 years and was originally associated with Zoroastrianism.

Nowadays, it is a secular holiday celebrated by all Iranians, regardless of religion. It is also observed by numerous communities in Central Asia, including in Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Iraq, India, and Pakistan.

In 2009, Nowruz was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List, and it has been celebrated as International Nowruz Day since 2010.

Nowruz symbolises the rebirth of nature, a new beginning, and hope. In Iranian tradition, it signifies the triumph of light over darkness. According to ancient Persian beliefs, the god Ahura Mazda created the world with the help of six holy spirits, symbolising the number seven, which is also important in New Year rituals.
