Iran and Poland – Developing Relations Based on Historical Experience

Interview with Dr Hossein Gharibi, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Poland

Given that you have served as Iran’s ambassador in Warsaw for over three years, how do you assess bilateral relations, especially from a historical perspective?

Relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Poland are built on solid foundations, thanks to 550 years of contact and a century of embassy activity in both countries. This historical basis has made our relations resilient in the face of historical upheavals and times of crisis. Iran was one of only two countries that did not recognise the partition of Poland by neighbouring powers in 1795, and after the First World War, immediately following Poland’s regaining of independence, it was among the first countries to recognise it and open an embassy in Warsaw. However, the brightest chapter in the history of our relations remains the warm welcome extended by the Iranian people to around 120,000 Polish refugees during the Second World War—an event that has been the subject of many books and articles. The humanity and kindness shown by Iranians towards these refugees played a key role in strengthening social, cultural and political ties between our nations. Based on this valuable historical legacy, the relations between our countries in the areas of politics, economy and culture are at an acceptable level, albeit with various ups and downs. Both Iran and Poland are well acquainted with each other, which facilitates the achievement of effective diplomatic goals.
