On May 22, the Republic of Azerbaijan celebrated its Independence Day in the historic halls of the Bristol Hotel in Warsaw, which was once co-owned by Ignacy Jan Paderewski.
Her Excellency Nargiz Gurbanova, the Azerbaijani Ambassador to Poland, hosted the event. In her speech, she referred to the venue’s symbolic significance, recalling the historical ties between Azerbaijan and the distinguished Polish statesman.
She began her address with the following words:
– Exactly 107 years ago, on May 28, 1918, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic proclaimed its independence. This was an event of immense significance – the first time in the history of the Turkic and Muslim world that a democratic republic was established. Although the Azerbaijan Republic existed for only a short period, it left a lasting mark on the history of Azerbaijan and the entire region. In many respects, its policies were revolutionary for the times.
The ambassador proudly recalled the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic’s achievements, stating:
– The law on the right to vote deserves special recognition, as it granted all citizens of the Republic, regardless of ethnic origin or religion, full voting rights. This ground-breaking legislation included women, making Azerbaijan one of the first countries in the world and the first Muslim-majority country to guarantee women equal political rights with men.
Though the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic existed for only 23 months, it left behind lasting ideals of freedom and sovereignty. Regaining independence in 1991 was the culmination of the Azerbaijani nation’s long-standing aspirations. Today, 107 years after the proclamation of independence and 30 years after its restoration, these values continue to serve as the foundation of the country’s state policy – emphasized Her Excellency Ambassador Nargiz Gurbanova.
