On Thursday 13th June 2024, in the historic interiors of the Staszic Palace, the photographic exhibition “Pablo Neruda: The Literary Legacy of the Great Chilean Poet and His Relationship with Poland” was inaugurated, dedicated to one of the most fascinating poets of the 20th century and a Nobel Prize winner. The event brought together a wide range of writers, diplomats and poetry lovers who came to pay tribute to this extraordinary Chilean artist.
Before the assembled guests were immersed themselves in the magical world of images from Pablo Neruda’s life and poetry, the Ambassador of the Republic of Chile, Aylin Joo Liem, gave a speech in which she spoke passionately about Neruda’s relationship with Poland, highlighting his role not only as a poet, but also as a diplomat and defender of freedom. – Although it is less well known, Pablo Neruda, who was deeply involved in poetry, was also a diplomat who served Chile for more than 25 years (…). Pablo Neruda arrived in Warsaw in 1949. He was 45 years old and instead of discover new literary movements, he began to cultivate the serenity that poetry requires, and to reflect on his political convictions – the Ambassador recalled, adding that Neruda’s encounter with Poland was reflected in his poetry, especially in works dedicated to Polish history and to the people who persevered in the struggle for freedom.
Among the invited guests was Dr Agnieszka Flisek, an eminent expert on Neruda’s work, who, in her speech, introduced the audience to the complexity and diversity of his poetry. The originality of Neruda’s poetry is determined as much by his chameleon-like ability to change style, genre and tone as by his openness to a variety of influences. From Quevedo’s painful awareness of transience to Whitman’s spontaneity and vitality, from the vividness and ecstatic journeys of the French Symbolists to the sensual concreteness of Nicanor Parra’s anti-poetry, from Ruben Darío’s pantheistic and panerotic vision of nature to Mayakovsky’s revolutionary passion – said Dr Agnieszka Flisek, referring to Neruda’s extraordinary ability to combine different aesthetics, genres and literary styles.
