Chile, officially the Republic of Chile, is a country located in the western part of South America. It is the southernmost country in the world and the closest to Antarctica, stretching over a narrow strip of land between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean covering more than 6,000 km of Pacific Ocean coastline. Santiago, its capital, is located in a valley surrounded by the Andes and the mountains of the Chilean coast. At the National History Museum, located in the palm-lined Plaza de Armas, you can learn about the country’s rich history. The country is famous for its incredibly diverse landscapes, world-famous wine and beer, incredible artistic culture, history, famous Chileans and excellent food.
On the occasion of the 104th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Chile and Poland, H.E. Chilean Ambassador Aylin Joo Liem hosted a reception on 26th September 2023. Chile’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gloria de la Fuente, was a special guest at the ceremony.
The official part of the ceremony began with the playing of the Chilean national anthem and the Dabrowski’s Mazurka. Few people know that Chile’s anthem was adopted in 1847, with words written by Eusebio Lillo Robles and music composed by Ramón Carnicer y Battle. Digging a little deeper into its history, we find that Chile’s first anthem was approved by the government in 1819. It was composed by Manuel Robles and the words were written by Bernardo de Vera y Pintado. It was first performed on 20th August 1820 at a party celebrating the birthday of Bernardo O’Higgins, a South American revolutionary and the first leader of Chile from 1817 to 1823, commander of the armed uprising against Spain that resulted in Chile’s independence.
In accordance with the principle of precedence, the first to speak was Gloria de la Fuente, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Chile, who emphasised in her speech that relations between Chile and Poland are friendly. She also mentioned Ignacy Domeyko – the famous Polish geologist, mineralogist and mining engineer who spent half a century in Chile, and whose knowledge of geology and mineralogy proved invaluable in Chile. The Minister also mentioned that trade and investment has become an organic part of bilateral relations between Poland and Chile. She cited examples of companies developing cooperation between our countries, referring to KGHM as a leading partner. She expressed confidence in the further development of bilateral economic relations, including in mining and the exchange of concessions.
The floor was then taken by Wojciech Gerwel, Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, who mentioned the fruitful dialogue, thanks to which areas of cooperation between Poland and Chile are better recognised, such as the mining area, which is a strong component of relations between our countries due to the presence of KGHM, a Polish company which is an investor in northern Chile. As he added, the talks also covered new climate technology and environmental sustainability, as well as education and science in the context of Chile and Poland’s cooperation in Antarctica. He also emphasised that Poland and Chile are countries that promote democracy, human rights and respect international law.
At the end of the official part, H.E. Ambassador of Chile to Chile Aylin Joo Liem said that after such a successful two speeches, she had no choice but to invite the guests to a cocktail party. The Ambassador personally took care to present the Chilean specialities that were on the tables, which was a very nice gesture on her part. In addition to Chilean specialities, Chile’s national beverage, pisco, was served, as well as excellent Chilean wines, well known to Polish wine connoisseurs.
The reception passed in a very friendly and cordial atmosphere.
