Celebration of 50 years of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Poland

Diplomatic relations between Poland and the Philippines were established on

September 1973.

On 21 September, the Philippine Embassy in Warsaw celebrated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of the Philippines and the Republic of Poland by holding a reception at the Royal Castle in Warsaw.

The event was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Sejm and Senate of the Republic of Poland and several other ministries, representatives of the diplomatic corps, the world of business, science and culture, as well as members of the Filipino community in Warsaw.

In her address, H.E. Ambassador Leah M. Basinang-Ruiz of the Philippines recalled the origins of relations between the two countries, noting that the establishment of diplomatic relations, which took place on  22 September 1973, strengthened bilateral contacts in business, culture, education, the arts, and at the same time provided a solid foundation for the establishment of lasting relations between the Philippines and Poland.

H.E. the Ambassador also highlighted the accelerated pace of bilateral exchanges in recent years, including high-level visits and consultations, parliamentary exchanges, active cooperation in the defence sector, the negotiation of cooperation agreements and a steady increase in trade and investment in both sides.

The guest of honour, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jaroslaw Lindenberg sent a congratulatory message on behalf of the Polish government, confirming the progress achieved by both sides in deepening and expanding bilateral relations, and expressing satisfaction with his personal role and contribution to the historic re-opening of the Polish Embassy in Manila in 2018.
He also stressed that relations between the countries are characterised by friendly relations based on respect, understanding and mutually beneficial cooperation.

A special highlight of the celebration was a concert by Polish pianist Jerzy Michał Maciejewski, whose musical programme aimed to highlight the love and talent of the Filipino and Polish people for the creative arts. Jerzy M. Maciejewski performed several well-loved pieces by Frédéric Chopin, as well as Nicanor Abelardo’s Nocturne No. 1, demonstrating the bond between the two revered composers. Nicanor Abelardo (1893-1934) was a talented Filipino composer, well known for his Kundiman songs.

Following the welcoming ceremony and the musical part of the programme, H.E. Ambassador Leah
M. Basinang-Ruiz and Undersecretary of State J. Lindenberg toasted the landmark anniversary, followed by a cocktail reception in the Council Hall of the Royal Castle.
