A tale of beauty. Treasures of ancient Basilicata

2024-05-31

On 29 February at the Italian Cultural Institute, the Italian Ambassador to Poland, Luca Franchetti Pardo, inaugurated the archaeological exhibition “A Tale of Beauty. Treasures of ancient Basilicata”, while inviting visitors on a journey through an ancient landscape filled with the secrets of the ancestors who shaped the history of the region.

The exhibition is the result of fruitful cooperation and commitment between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Cooperation, the Ministry of Culture and the network of national museums of the Basilicata region with the Italian Cultural Institutes in Hamburg, Warsaw, Budapest, Athens and Vienna, demonstrating the spirit of solidarity in an effort to share the cultural wealth of the Italic peoples.

“A Tale of Beauty” is an introspective journey that takes visitors back to the time of the Oenotrians, an ancient Italic people living between the ninth and sixth centuries BC in the southern area of present-day Basilicata before the second Greek colonisation. This is the story of a society where the cult of the dead played a central role and the art of tomb building and its furnishings reflected a deep love and respect for the past and the ancestors. All of this is captured in the extraordinary exhibits – from magnificent bronze and amber ornaments to finely crafted everyday objects, which together form a mosaic of ancient peoples’ lives.
