On 28 October, the Museum of the Earth in Warsaw hosted the ceremonial opening of the exhibition “Gold and the Coca Leaf” – a unique cultural event that introduced the Polish public to the richness of Colombia’s tangible and intangible heritage.
The exhibition was initiated by His Excellency Assad José Jater Peña, Ambassador of Colombia to Poland, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia and the institution Artesanías de Colombia. The event brought together representatives from the worlds of diplomacy, culture, academia, and art, as well as enthusiasts of Latin American history. The ceremonial opening provided not only an opportunity to showcase unique artefacts, but also to emphasise the importance of intercultural dialogue and the role of culture as a bridge in international relations. In his speech, the Colombian Ambassador underlined that the exhibition is an invitation to a deeper understanding of Colombia – a country of extraordinary ethnic, historical, and symbolic diversity.
“Gold and the Coca Leaf” centres on two key elements of the cultural identity of Colombia’s indigenous communities. Gold, used in pre-Columbian art and ritual for centuries, symbolises the sacred, power, the cosmos, and humanity’s relationship with nature. The coca leaf, often misunderstood and viewed solely through the lens of contemporary issues, is presented here as a plant of profound spiritual, social, and medicinal significance, rooted in Andean traditions for millennia.
