On September 8, the Embassy of the Republic of North Macedonia in Warsaw hosted a ceremonial reception to mark the 34th anniversary of the country’s independence.
The event brought together representatives from the political, diplomatic, cultural, tourism, and business sectors. Among the guests were delegates from 40 embassies and Ms Agnieszka Kowalska, Director of the Department for Europe at the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In his opening remarks, H.E. Ambassador Jasmin Kahil emphasised the significance of the occasion: – September 8 marks the 1991 referendum that led to the creation of an independent state. This day is especially meaningful for us, symbolising Macedonia’s perseverance, determination, and peaceful path to independence – he said.
Ambassador Kahil also reflected on pivotal moments in North Macedonia’s history—from the short-lived Kruševo Republic in 1903, to the resistance of the Macedonian population during World War II, to the 1991 declaration of independence and the country’s admission to the United Nations in 1993. He highlighted North Macedonia’s path to NATO membership in 2020 and noted with pride: Less than five years after joining NATO, a distinguished female politician from North Macedonia was appointed Deputy Secretary General of the Alliance, underscoring our country’s commitment and credibility within the organisation.
