Chichén Itzá: the pride of the Mayan civilisation

Without a doubt, it is the most photographed attraction in Mexico. This ancient Mayan city is located on the Yucatán Peninsula and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monumental Kukulkan pyramid, also known as El Castillo, attracts thousands of tourists a day. It is especially worth visiting during the spring and autumn equinoxes, when the shadow cast by the pyramid’s steps creates the illusion of a snake crawling down the stairs — remarkable evidence of the Mayans’ astronomical knowledge.

Mexico City: the heart of the country

One of the largest cities in the world, it is a fascinating melting pot of cultures. When visiting the capital, start in the historic centre with the monumental Zócalo and the Templo Mayor ruins, the site of a former Aztec temple. Right next door is the impressive Metropolitan Cathedral, and a little farther away is the famous Anthropological Museum, where you can see the legendary Sun Stone (incorrectly called the Aztec calendar), among other things. The capital is also home to neighbourhoods such as Coyoacán, which is artistic, colourful and vibrant and contains the house of Frida Kahlo, one of the most recognisable figures in Mexican culture.
