On the occasion of the 202nd anniversary of Brazil’s independence, the Brazilian Ambassador to Poland H.E. Haroldo de Macedo Ribeiro and his wife Maria Emilia Diniz Papini Ribeiro hosted a reception on September 6th.
The ceremony was opened by His Excellency Haroldo de Macedo Ribeiro, who welcomed the guests and then recalled the history of Brazil on its way to independence.
217 years ago, in Paris, France, Napoleon Bonaparte made a decision with far-reaching consequences for Brazil: to invade the Kingdom of Portugal, occupy the country and take over Portuguese colonies around the world. As French troops were about to enter Lisbon, Queen Maria I, her son João, the Portuguese royal family and between 10,000 and 15,000 people boarded several ships and crossed the Atlantic Ocean to Brazil under the protection of the British Royal Navy. Thousands of new arrivals from Lisbon settled in Rio de Janeiro and made the Brazilian city the headquarters of the Portuguese Empire for 13 long years – said H.E. the Ambassador.
In his speech, Ambassador Haroldo de Macedo Ribeiro also stressed that today, more than 200 years after those events, Brazil and Portugal are the best partners in a world divided by so many disputes. Brazil has inherited from the Portuguese people their wonderful language and much more. He also mentioned that Brazilians are proud of their Portuguese heritage, as well as their indigenous and African heritage.
