On the occasion of the 64th anniversary of the independence of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a reception was held in the gardens of the residence on 28 June. It was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representatives of the Polish Parliament, members of the diplomatic corps, members of international organisations and many other distinguished guests.
After welcoming the guests, H.E. Clémentine Shakembo Kamanga, Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Poland, gave a brief introduction to the history of her country, and said, The Democratic Republic of the Congo is located in the heart of the African continent. It covers an area of 2,345,410 square kilometres, almost a subcontinent in size. It has a unique character. At independence, it was called the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It was then renamed the Republic of Zaire for 32 years before returning to its original name, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in 1997. Since 1960, its motto has been the unity and integrity of the country, the development of the nation and the maintenance of good relations with countries and friends around the world.
She also outlined the current political situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where the electoral process, which began in December 2023 and ended on 12 June 2024, has just come to an end. It may seem long, but that is the nature of a country with a population of 110 million and 41 million voters, where there are 21 candidates are standing for the presidency and 100,000 for both houses of parliament. There are also some 400 political parties in the country.
Outgoing President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo won a landslide victory and was sworn in for a second term on 20 January 2024. A prime minister was appointed and a republican government was formed with 54 members, 17 of whom are women, representing 30%. The new government is headed by a woman.
