Today marks the 79th anniversary of the historic referendum in which Italians voted to establish a republican and democratic state. With these words, His Excellency Luca Franchetti Pardo, the Italian Ambassador to Poland, began his address during the celebration of Italy’s National Day. The ceremony took place on June 4^th in the beautiful auditorium of the Warsaw University of Technology.

Speaking before an audience of over 900 guests – including numerous members of the Polish government and parliament – Ambassador Franchetti Pardo highlighted the historical importance of the June 2, 1946 referendum, which laid the foundation for the Italian Constitution. He noted that the choice for democracy made 79 years ago was also made possible by the courage and ultimate sacrifice of many Polish soldiers at Monte Cassino and on other Italian battlefields.

The Ambassador also addressed the ongoing war in Ukraine, reaffirming Italy’s strong commitment to NATO’s eastern flank and its continued support for Ukraine. He announced that Italy will host a conference in Rome next month focused on Ukraine’s reconstruction in 2025.

Congratulating Poland on its effective leadership during its EU Council presidency, Ambassador Franchetti Pardo emphasized several key areas of shared focus:

 – First, security and defence, in which Europe has made remarkable strides in this area, and both Italy and Poland share a common vision and a firm belief in the essential role of transatlantic relations.

– I would also like to refer to another shared priority: enlargement, which we prefer to see as a historic “European unification” process, welcoming the inclusion of nations that deserve a common home in the EU.
